According to transcripts obtained by the Huffington Post, Tea Party backed pro-life Scott DesJarlais (R-TN) made multiple calls to his mistress about getting an abortion. Literally, it was the pot calling the kettle black.
DesJarlais did not deny that the conversations were legitimate but spun it as a low-ball attack from the Democratic Party: “Desperate personal attacks do not solve our nation’s problems, yet it appears my opponents are choosing to once again engage in the same gutter politics that CBS news called the dirtiest in the nation just 2 years ago.”
Some of the things DesJarlais said in the conversation are downright obnoxious. In this day and age, in which the Republican party keeps trying to restrict a woman’s right to their own body, it’s fitting that a story like this comes to light right before the presidential election. Maybe, just maybe, this will remind the public that politicians only spill bullshit to get votes and that the public should look at their actions rather than their words.
The back in forth between the two goes something like this:
“You told me you’d have an abortion, and now we’re getting too far along without one,” DesJarlais said to the Woman.
“You told me you would have time to go with me and everything,” the woman complains.
“I said, if I could, I would, didn’t I? And I will try,” DesJarlais says. “If I can [find] time, you’re saying you still will?”
“Yes,” the woman says.
The woman goes on further to say, “This is not fair to me. I don’t want you in my life.”
“Well, I didn’t want to be in your life either, but you lied to me about something that caused us to be in this situation, and that’s not my fault, that’s yours,” the doctor responds.
“Well, it’s [your] fault for sleeping with your patient,” the woman fires back.
This was all a desperate attempt to save the poor doctor’s failing marriage, which fell apart soon after anyway. This story is disgusting and should serve as a wake-up call to everyone who still thinks that abortion is an issue. The only person it is an issue to is the woman, not you or your church. Actual civil liberties and freedom is what we need in this country.

I have mixed feelings about this story. The congressman is correct – this is old news. All his marital difficulties were well known and well publicized during the last election. I don't like marital difficulties being used as a political weapon — by anybody. But I guess all's fair and love war and politics. And given the religious leaning of his constituency, this may be an effective weapon.
