Harris Savides, ‘Zodiac’ and ‘Elephant’ cinematographer, dies

Sad news, folks. Noted cinematographer talent Harris Savides passed away today. He was 55 years old.

Savides is known for working with film directors such as David Fincher, Sofia Coppola, Mark Romanek, Gus Van Zant and Ridley Scott. His work can be seen in movies like “Somewhere,” “Zodiac,” “Elephant,” “Milk,” “American Gangster” and Sofia Coppola’s forthcoming “The Bling Ring.” He was also known for lensing Romanek’s “Criminal” music video for Fionna Apple.

Savides cut his teeth on music videos and commercials before graduating to feature films, and adopted an increasingly naturalistic approach to cinematography over the years that attempted to minimize high contrast lighting.

Take a look at some feature films that bear Savides cinematographic touch. I’d like to point out his work in the incredibly terrifying scene in Fincher’s “Zodiac.” Just impeccable work. It was shot on hi-def, but tell me that it doesn’t look as beautiful and nuanced as film!
