Sufjan Stevens out-maneuvers giant retail stores everywhere by being first to roll out the Christmas music for seasonally-inappropriate pre-Halloween release this year with the video for “Mr. Frosty Man.”
Christmas albums are strange things and hard to pull off, unless you’re She & Him, in which case your regular albums kind of sound like Christmas albums. Perhaps no one has done it stranger than Bob Dylan with “Christmas In The Heart,” but it looks like Sufjan is giving Bob a run for his money.
Instead of opting for traditional numbers like “Oh Come All Ye Faithful,” “Mr. Frosty Man” is a drunken-sounding Bad Santa of a carroll with Frosty mowing down zombies with a chainsaw and blowing their heads off with a shotgun. Merry Christmas!
Sufjan’s “Silver & Gold: Songs For Christmas” releases next week.
