Here’s the first video from Johnny Marr’s solo debut
2012 marks Johnny Marr‘s 30th year of making great music that probably influenced you in one way or another. He’s never been a flashy, fireworks guitarist like Eddie Van Halen or Dave Navarro, but he was a big part of what made The Smiths great, as well as a stint in the last decade with Modest Mouse and what is by far the most underrated corner of his catalog: the two records he released with The The, 1989’s “Mind Bomb” and 92’s “Dusk.” “Dusk” never exactly rose to prominence in a decade of alt rock dominated by Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Green Day, but it still holds up as one of the best records of the 90s.
30 years later, Marr will finally release a solo debut next year, and today we get the first video for the track “The Messenger.” The track itself features Marr’s signature slidey-twangy guitar (of course) and a distinctly British guitar-rock sound, a little like Oasis with better guitar and catchier hooks.
