Kwes returns with a new single, “Rollerblades,” off his forthcoming 7″ due out January 22. The single is built on a melancholic piano line, around which Kwes constructs the instrumental field, flush with droning, ambient synthesizers. The influence of Damon Albarn (his collaborator on the DRC Music project) seems apparent, but I say this in the best possible way. There’s a dark Brit Pop sensibility to the melodies and arrangement. Around 2:25 the song goes silent before Kwes resurrects it as a neo-Boards of Canada or Aphex Twin-esque sonic excursion. It’s a beautiful coda to an already great track.
