Watch an elephant play a piano

Nov 27, 2012

When pianist Paul Barton and his wife Khwan visited ElephantStay, a non-profit elephant sanctuary in Thailand, they brought a little green piano to entertain the animals. One afternoon, Barton was playing for a 5 year-old elephant called Soi when Peter, the elephant above, heard the tune and decided to join Barton for a duet. According to Barton’s description:

Peter heard the music and made [a] deviation from the mud road (behind the tree) to the piano. I suddenly felt something strange sucking the back of my head and had an unexpected duet partner.

Peter, who doesn’t have the lightest touch, appears to almost break the piano a couple times before eventually moving from banging the keys to bopping Barton on the head and making suction cups with his trunk. He’s got decent rhythm, though.
