Gay hate crime victim Austin Head runs for office with blowjob pun as campaign slogan

Aug 1, 2013

Back in November, Phoenix-based DJ and event promoter Austin Head was on his way home from the club when two strangers attacked him while shouting homophobic slurs at the then-28-year-old. He eventually recovered from the attack, which caused damage to his eye, and the two men were arrested for aggravated assault charges. “I’m proud of how Phoenix reacted to it,” he told KPHO-TV Channel 5, reporting that the incident and the city’s support for him is what has driven the voter to turn politician. Head announced in the spring that he is running for the District 4 Phoenix City Council seat.

“Phoenix is a progressive city,” he continued in the Channel 5 interview, “and we have to make sure it stays that way.”

Only until recently, however, has the campaign started to pick up steam — well, at least for Internet candy’s sake — all resulting from a few punny posters that he distributed through his district. The signs read “I ❤ Head” with a URL to his campaign website below.

Blowjob jokes — now that’s what I call PROGRESSIVE! The people of Phoenix have gone apey for the signs — some even stealing them, as our friends at HyperVocal have pointed out. But some politicos, such as Arizona state Senator Katie Hobbs, don’t share the same sentiment:

Head defended his use of the slogan on News/Talk 92.3 KTAR this week. “Since [political campaigning] is new to me, I needed a way to stand out from the pack,” he said. “It’s not the orthodox way of campaigning, and a lot of the political types have questioned it.”

Well, I’m no crack strategist, but for a man who’s on the outside and looking in on the political sphere, maybe owning up to your faults before letting anyone else take a cheap shot at your name or whatever shit you’re into wouldn’t bet the worst angle at winning a local election.

Anyway, Head seems like a nice enough guy. Below is his campaign video from March:
