M.I.A. might just go ahead and leak her new album, Death Grips-style
M.I.A. has been struggling to release her new record “Matangi” for months. Back in January, she revealed that her label Interscope thought the record was “too positive” and wanted her to keep tweaking it. “I thought I’d finished it. I finished it and then I handed the record in, like a couple of months ago,” she told Australia’s Gold Coast Bulletin at the time. “[But] at the moment, I’ve been told it’s ‘too positive’. So we’re having a bit of an issue at the label.”
Apparently sick and tired of waiting around, M.I.A. is cultivating some of the bad-girl image Interscope seems to want from her—by threatening to just leak the album to the public herself, Death Grips-style. She tweeted Friday:
If interscope takes longer i can always leak this next week and make a new one by the time they are ready.

Of course as Death Grips found out when they pulled this stunt, circumventing Epic Records by leaking their album directly to fans (with an erect penis on the cover), when you screw over your label like this they tend to drop you right quick.
Although that hasn’t exactly hurt Death Grips’ career so far—these guys don’t even have to show up to their own concerts anymore, and they still get paid for playing them.
Pushing M.I.A. to be less “positive” could end up backfiring for Interscope, after all.
