How Ben Affleck ended up as Batman
So by now you’ve heard the news that Ben Affleck is the new Batman.
There are many things to be confused about here: Ben’s been down the superhero road before to disastrous effect. (It took him years to climb back from “Daredevil.”) We all know Ben is best behind the camera and not in front of it. And when he’s in front of it, he’s displayed a bizarre penchant for only being really good while wearing a beard, which is tough to do inside a Batman mask.
Anyway whether you’re an Affleck hater or lover, one question looms: How the hell did this happen? How did Christian Bale, for whom “Batman” is the greatest thing to have happened since “American Psycho,” not make the cut on the new Batman vs. Superman movie slated for 2015?
Christian Bale apparently refused to appear in any new Batman movie unless “The Dark Knight Rises” director Christopher Nolan returned to direct it. Instead, “Man of Steel” director Zack Snyder was hired for the job. Just this month rumors were spinning that Warner Bros. offered Bale $60 million to change his mind about working with Snyder. He still refused.
Which may not completely explain how we ended up with Affleck, as it seems like there may have been a better plan B. But it does explain how Batman lost Bale. The man is either A) insanely committed to Nolan or B) already so rich that another $60 million doesn’t really matter. Both are pretty crazy.
