Before they were famous: 10 actors’ humble career starts

Christina Hendricks in an Everclear music video, Idris Elba as an outer-space pizza delivery man, Sharon Stone hawking Diet Sprite — listen, everyone’s gotta eat.

1. Tom Selleck in a 1971 deodorant commercial

Nine years before his breakout role in “Magnum P.I.,” Selleck shilled for Right Guard anti-perspirant. And, yes, his pornstache was accounted for.

2. Morgan Freeman in a 1973 Listerine ad

You know, I really believe he’s a blue collar working for the telephone company trying to convince a colleague that his brand of antiseptic mouthwash is what keeps that silver tongue of his in tip-top shape. Why did he have to wait so long for that Oscar?

3. Christina Hendricks in a 1998 Everclear music video

In December 1998, “Mad Men’s” Christina Hendricks covered up her cleave in Everclear’s “One Hit Wonder.” Honestly, you don’t have to sit through the entire thing if you don’t want to. She appears right at the beginning, then again around 1:25.

4. Patton Oswalt in an educational video about student loans

Grantland reported that the 19-year-old Oswalt got $300 for the gig. This is not a stand-up gig. Just keep watching. Skip to 8:50 if you don’t believe me.

5. Jennifer Lawrence in a “Super Sweet 16″ MTV promo.

She was 14 at the time of filming. “I remember getting [my SAG card] in the mail, and it was the best day of my life,” she said at the 2013 SAG Awards, “because it officially made me a professional actor, which put me in the category with all of you.”

6. Leonardo Dicaprio in “Critters 3″

Even though he starred in just one of the four installments, Leo has the honor of carrying the entire legacy of the “Critters” franchise on his shaven back. (ed. note: He probably shaves his back.) It’s actually not a horribly horrible series. You can watch all four “Critters” movies on YouTube right here.

7. Sharon Stone in a 1990 Diet Sprite commercial

The 30-second TV spot ran three years after playing Steve Guttenberg’s love interest in “Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol” and two years before her groundbreaking super-hot serial killer in “Basic Instinct.”

8. Keanu Reeves in a 1987 Kellogg’s cereal commercial

No way that dude eats Corn Flakes. Do you know the amount of complex carbohydrates that are in one serving? He didn’t get those washboard abs in “Point Break” from slurping down bowls of breakfast candy, you know.

9. John Ratzenberger as rebel soldier in “Empire Strikes Back”

It’s hardly embarrassing to have a bit part in one of the greatest science fiction movies ever, but perhaps it’s embarrassing for him. Now that Cliff Clavin from “Cheers” is a hardcore Tea Partier who admitted he wants to spread the seed of Allen West across the United States, at this point his taste in film and just about everything else is probably way up his ass.

10. Idris Elba as “Pizza Delivery Man” in obscure British sci fi series

At 22 years old, long before he was knighted TV royalty with his role as Stringer Bell in “The Wire,” Elba brought pizza to some jagoff’s door in an episode of “Space Precinct.”
