Watch this man barely escape a fire by climbing out of a fifth-story window
This morning a construction worker on 172nd St. in Washington Heights dangled from a fifth-story window as a fire raged behind him, and brave neighbors extended a ladder from a fire escape to try to save him. Other, less helpful neighbors filmed video of the tense scene.
In the video, the ladder at first seems like the worst option — it’s barely stable, and the man gives up after a few tries. Then, the smoke explodes behind him, pushing him further out of the window, which is when one of the neighbors scrambles out on the precarious ladder, to meet him and lead him back to safety.
When the firefighters finally arrive, the guy filming the video heckles them, “You guys are late, beat it!” Take that, guys who run into burning buildings for a living.
