Jimmy Kimmel kid’s ‘kill everyone in China’ comment now warrants White House ‘investigation’
After Jimmy Kimmel’s segment with a little kid suggesting America “kill everyone in China” to solve our debt problems stirred up a bunch of controversy, Americans took to WhiteHouse.gov to demand the president “investigate.” ABC issued an apology, but that apparently wasn’t enough for some. Now the petition to “cut the show” and issue “a sincere apology” has hit 100,000 signatures, the White House’s threshold for responding to requests.
“The program is totally unacceptable and it must be cut,” the petition reads. “A sincere apology must be issued. It is extremely distasteful and this is the same rhetoric used in Nazi Germany against Jewish people. Please immediately cut the show and issue a formal apology.”
The petition’s creator may be confusing the president of the U.S. for the network president of ABC—Obama clearly doesn’t have the authority to “cut the show.” At any rate, the White House will now have to respond to the request.
Earlier this year the administration increased the number of petition signatures required on WhiteHouse.gov from 25,000 to 100,000, because it was too easy to round up 25K. A petition for the U.S. to build a “Star Wars”-style Death Star received 34,000 signatures in November, and the White House decided it should raise the threshold so it would only have to respond to important issues. Like the petition to deport Piers Morgan, which got 109,000 signatures in January.
I’m actually not sure whether any petition launched on WhiteHouse.gov has actually been taken up in the affirmative. It seems like it’s mostly used for Americans to vent and pester the government about inane stuff like building a Death Star and canceling “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” The petition to fire the federal prosecutor who went after Aaron Swartz was probably the most serious petition launched to date, and needless to say that prosecutor still has her job.
But as long as there are Americans, there will be goofy requests to field. Here’s the full petition text:
I was very disturbed by Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Kids Table’ show. It was aired on ABC recently and talked about killing all the Chinese so that the states do not need to pay back their debts to China. The kids might not know anything better. However, Jimmy Kimmel and ABC’s management are adults. They had a choice not to air this racist program, which promotes racial hatred. The program is totally unacceptable and it must be cut. A sincere apology must be issued. It is extremely distasteful and this is the same rhetoric used in Nazi Germany against Jewish people. Please immediately cut the show and issue a formal apology.
