Japan is obsessed with hamster butts

Apparently the latest fad in Japan is looking at pictures of hamster butts, called “hamuketsu”–a mash-up of the words for “hamster” and “bottom.” Photobooks of hamster butts are selling like hotcakes, and there is even a Facebook page devoted to pictures of hamster butts. I guess they think they’re super cute or something.

Are they cute? I honestly can’t tell. I have a thing where cute doesn’t work on me. I can look at a hamster’s ass all day and remain unimpressed. One of the hamster butt photo books is called “Hamuketsu: So Cute You Could Faint,” so apparently this totally does it for some people.

“The great thing about hamuketsu is that it is delightfully cute.  I can’t stop smiling when I see these butts,” Takeshi Takahashi, a spokesman at Basilico, one of the Hamuketsu book publishers, told the Wall Street Journal. Well, to each their own. I don’t know what to tell you. I’m glad hamster butts bring you joy. I guess it’s the little things?
