While absolutely hilarious, the trend is completely useless
Sarah Palin channeled the spirit of George W. earlier this week, Tweeting a word that does not exist: “refudiate.” In her defense, she compared herself to Shakespeare, who often invented new words.
Left-wing progressives have banded together in a hilarious but totally marginalized campaign to poke fun at the Bard Of Wasilla, combining Shakespeare quotes with Palin-isms using the hashtag #ShakesPalin. With midterm elections a few months away, the campaign is hilarious and smart, but guaranteed to not get you on television. Is this insistence on highbrow nerdiness why the left keeps losing?
Maybe it’s that progressives accept with resignation that the midterm elections are lost.
Or maybe it’s that the “so called ‘educated’ and ‘informed’” left, as Palin might call them, will always feel too entitled to get down and dirty in a political street fight. Instead we’d rather hang back on the sidelines and mutter snarky insults predicated on the bits of Shakespeare that we memorized in high school that no one but those already in our voting block will understand.
It’s a little sad that this little inside joke is all the populist muscle the left can pack. Still, some of them are hilarious. Here are some of our faves:
#ShakesPalin “To be hope-y and change-y or not to be hope-y and change-y, that is the gotcha question.”
#shakespalin To be Governor, or not to be Governor; a book deal is in question. ”
“This above all; to thine own talking points be true” #shakespalin #bardofwasilla
“You blocks, you stones, you worse than senseless things! O you tea baggers, you cruel men of the Republicans.Knew you not Obama?” #ShakesPalin
“Mumbo-jumbo, foil and fumble; language burns and tea parties rumble.” #ShakesPalin
“To offend and judge are distinct offices, and I occupy both.” #shakespalin
