Married couple, both adopted, learns they have the same mother
A Brazilian couple, both of whom were adopted, spent years looking for their biological mothers. They were shocked recently to both find her at the same time—the couple, it turns out, shares a mother.
Adriana and Leandro, who didn’t want to reveal their last names, have been married for seven years and have a six-year-old daughter. They were both adopted, and as is common with many adopted people, curiosity about their biological parents followed Adriana and Leandro throughout their lives. Adriana’s mother had disappeared when she was one and she was raised by her father. Leandro was raised by a stepfather and also knew that his mother had left when he was a baby. Both Adriana and Leandro were from Sao Paulo, and both their mothers were named Maria—a common enough name.
Leandro has spent his entire life in Sao Paulo, whereas Adriana just moved back to the city ten years ago after her a previous marriage fell apart. She and Leandro met, married and had a daughter.
However Adriana couldn’t couldn’t give up her search for her mother. Eventually she contacted city radio station Radio Globo for help. They were able to track down her mother, and Adriana was reunited with her on the air.
However she was shocked when, at the end of the radio show, Maria said she’d also had a son named Leandro whom she never knew, as she also left him as a baby. It became clear that Adriana had married her own brother.
“Now I’m scared to go home and find out that Leandro doesn’t want me anymore,” she said. “I love him so much.”
“We thought it was funny that both our mothers had the same name,” she says, “but it is a common name so we just thought it was a coincidence.”
The couple has talked through it and they will stay together despite technically being siblings.
