This weekend the hordes will descend on Chicago’s Grant Park for Lollapalooza. The godfather of modern American rock fests, founded in 1997, nearly lost its footing earlier this decade, but has re-emerged stronger than ever as music-culture staple.
This year’s lineup plays kind of like an east-of-the-Mississippi Coachella, with notable reunion headliners like Soundgarden and The Strokes rounded out by a solid showing of quality indie rock. It’s a little light on hip-hop overall, but it does have Cypress Hill which makes it hard to complain.
D+T will be on the ground this weekend, and come monday we’ll have great video interviews with Phoenix, Cut Copy, Jamie Lidell, and more.
But until then, here’s our guide to what you should watch this weekend:
Tonight:
6:30pm: Jamie Lidell
8:30pm: The Strokes (Just watch half the set – second half will be the same)
9pm: Lady Gaga (Oh, stop complaining and watch it – she’ll have fireworks and stuff)
Saturday:
12:30pm: The Soft Pack
1:15pm: Wild Beasts
2:15pm: Warpaint
3:15pm: The XX
4:15pm: Grizzly Bear
5:15pm: Metric
6:15pm: Spoon
7:30pm: Cut Copy
8:30pm: Green Day (Yes the new record sucks, but they’ll play some stuff from American Idiot and they’re getting old. Phoenix is going to be great for years, and you’ve listened to “Lisztomania” enough this year.)
Sunday:
11:30am: Miniature Tigers
12:15pm: Antlers
1:00pm: The Dodos
–> Tough times for a couple hours here. Maybe eat a pot brownie to keep yourself entertained.
4:00pm: Yeasayer
5:00pm: Frightened Rabbit
6:00pm: Nothing great going on, but you can watch MGMT if you’ve got more pot brownies
7:15pm: The National
8:30pm: Arcade Fire
Stay tuned Monday for videos from the fest—and stay hydrated!
