Seven years ago, when I was bike messenger, some of my fellow couriers used to climb on top of double-decker bikes and try to knock each other over using big poles. They did this at night, under the Williamsburg Bridge, in Brooklyn. I always saw the point.
I chalked it up to two things. One, it seemed crazy, but it was a powerful thing that lasted only a few seconds — real adrenaline. Two, when you want to take a break from eking out a modern, quotidian existence, something medieval, like jousting, makes a whole lot of sense. It’s a bicycle-infused “Fight Club” — jarring and dangerous, but human.
Sure, we’re evolved, but we’re still animals. And we still drive to win.
