Ricky Gervais Unveils New Series ‘An Idiot Abroad’

Gervais sends idiot co-host Karl Pilkington on a whirlwind tour of global discomfort.

I am not a fan of the American version of “The Office.” I’m aware of my blasphemy, but listen. The american “Office” is missing something. That acerbic wit, the bleakness of the workplace, oh, and Ricky Gervais. Gervais, and his snide character of regional manager David Brent, are brilliant and that’s precisely why I’m excited for this.

If you watch The Ricky Gervais Show on HBO or listen to the previous podcasts then you know the idiot and butt of many of Gervais’ and co-host Stephen Merchant jokes, Karl Pilkington.

He’s an awkward man who’s perpetually lost in a stuttering, stumbling character. Now, Gervais and Merchant are sending him around the world for complete discomfort in the series, “An Idiot Abroad.” In Gervais’ words, “He [Karl] hates anything foreign, every thing different. I knew he’d hate it and that’s why I did it.”

“An Idiot Abroad” premiers on Sky 1 in Britain in September. Hopefully we’ll get some “Idiot” over here sometime after that.

    I agree, you cannot improve on perfection and that is what The original office is. I love Steve Carrell but the american version doesn't have the cringe effect that the superior Brit version was capable of. I cannot wait to see “An Idiot Abroad” I've already pre ordered it on the Amazon UK website. Extras is another brilliant show from the dynamic duo that is Ricky and Steve. I really enjoyed Steve's character as Ricky's agent. Yeah Karl….he is a maniac. I've been listening to the podcasts on my drive to work every morning for years (sick I know) and I still laugh at Karl's observations. Plus you just can't beat Ricky's laughter to start your day out right. BTW did you know Karl has a head like a fucking orange?
