Naked man brandishes knife, plays banjo for police

A Washington man was arrested Sunday following a bizarre standoff during which he serenaded police officers on the banjo.

According to Q13Fox, police were dispatched to a home in Vancouver, Washington, after a 911 call in which a man said his son — identified as Andrew Helmsworth — had tried to stab him. He must have taken a walk after that, because neighbors subsequently called and said there was a naked man walking around the neighborhood with a knife in his hand.

By the time police arrived on the scene, Helmsworth had barricaded himself inside the house. Accordingly, Washington sent every type of cop it had after him. Via Q13:

Vancouver police, on-duty SWAT officers, a K-9 unit and hostage negotiators were deployed to the scene, according to a news release from the Vancouver Police Department.

Sensing he was surrounded, the kooky cutlery enthusiast attempted to soothe the savage SWAT team by coming outside and serenading them on the banjo. At first, it seemed to be working! But as soon as he ended his song and tried to go back inside, police subdued him with a rubber bullet and took him into custody. Oh well, it was worth a shot.

Helmsworth was arrested on a charge of felony assault and booked into the Clark County jail. In an interview with local news station Fox 12, a neighbor described the incident as “crazy ridiculous.”
