Discovery TV Hostage Situation: More Human Than The Human

Nothing exciting ever happens at the Discovery Channel headquarters in Silver Spring, Md., until irate anti-human James Jae Lee stormed the building with an explosive strapped to his body, taking hostages and making outrageous demands.

In March, Andrew Joseph Stack III, a libertarian from Austin, Texas, flew a plane into the city’s IRS building. At that point, right-wing anti-government sentiment took a dangerous turn. Liberal earth-defenders don’t seem to have much in common with their Tea Party counterparts, but James Jae Lee has proven us wrong.

Today, Lee stormed the Discovery Channel headquarters, armed and dangerous, taking at least one hostage. One has to admit, the very idea of a hostage situation occurring at the Discovery Channel is ludicrous and pretty funny. “Those bastards at the Discovery Channel — I’ll show them!” It’s crazy. Personally, I wasn’t pleased when Professor Snape killed Dumbledore, but I didn’t storm the Scholastic headquarters and threaten to blow Clifford’s head off if they didn’t change the story.

The Discovery Channel may offer hours upon hours of family-friendly entertainment, but the company can’t change the world.

Lee disagrees. His demands:

“I want Discovery Communications to broadcast on their channels to the world their new program lineup and I want proof they are doing so. I want the new shows started by asking the public for inventive solution ideas to save the planet and the remaining wildlife on it,” the alleged manifesto reads, adding: “Nothing is more important than saving … the Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels. The humans? The planet does not need humans.”

I am not going to disagree with the wisdom of Lee’s statement, though I’m not happy he left out Beavers and Eagles and Kangaroos, important animal friends all.

Looking past the absurdity of this event, which is very, very hard to do, the message clear: Human mishandling of the planet has driven at least one person mad.

Since the event is political and, sadly, a little revolutionary it’s going to appeal to people on the fringe. Expect to hear more for pro-earth, anti-human revolutionaries. And if you work at Animal Planet, I’d watch your back.

UPDATE
Apparently, James Jae Lee has been taken down by 5-0. What’s worse, getting shot by the cops or being eaten by a shark? At least we all know how Lee would have answered that question.
