You can’t lose weight by farting because the world is bullshit
Leave it to Snopes to ruin Thanksgiving.
You may have seen this viral post making the rounds on Facebook, which purports that each fart you release into the world not only feels great, but also burns 67 calories, and that by letting one rip 52 times a day you can burn a pound of body fat.
Sounds too good to be true, right? But check this out — even Google backed up the claim. Google!
Google!
But alas, you can’t say smell ya later to your Nordic Track just yet, because perennial buzzkill Snopes is reporting that the claim is false:
Some people get a bit desperate when it comes to weight loss. They start wondering which of their daily activities burns enough calories to warrant increasing the frequency. We get questions about calorie consumption in a host of different scenarios. But perhaps the strangest question posed to date is: how many calories do you burn by farting?
If you take a moment to think about this, the answer is rather obvious: none! When you fart, your muscles relax and the gas pressure in your bowels do all the work in expelling the gas. The only way you would achieve a measurable figure in the calories burned farting is if you really strained yourself to the limit.
So there you have it. Hope you weren’t planning on a third helping of pumpkin pie this weekend because the world is bullshit and you can’t burn calories by farting “unless you really strain yourself to the limit.”
Fuck it. Challenge accepted.
