First legal ayahuasca retreat to open in the U.S.

Americans will no longer have to travel deep into the jungles of Peru to have a life-changing experience with ayahuasca.

According to Ayahuasca Healings, an organization that originally provided retreats to Peru for Americans looking to imbibe the ancient plant medicine, the first legal ayahuasca church will begin administering the stuff to U.S. psychonauts in January of 2016. It’s spiritual, it’s cosmic, and it’s just 90 minutes north of Sea-Tac airport.

Writes friendly stateside shaman Trinity de Guzman:

This is really happening! For truth. For love. For awakening. For us all!

To discover the depths of Who We Really Are. To commune with Mother Earth, learn from her, grow with her, and sit with this Sacred Sacrament, Mother Ayahuasca, this life-changing plant, great teacher, spirit, to ask her to show us what we need. To let go of what no longer serves us, and to come more and more deeeeply into our Divine Remembering.

We are moving onto 160 beautiful pristine acres, in Washington State, on December 1st, 2015!

The price: a mere “suggested donation” of $1,497 to $1,997 USD.

For those not in the know, ayahuasca is a psychotropic vine that has long been held as a sacrament by the indigenous peoples of Peru and surrounding areas but has recently gained popularity among new age-y westerners as an Eat, Pray, Love-style journey to self-actualization. (It also has applications for physical and mental health which, contrary to popular belief, do not require a belief in the supernatural.) That said, it’s an intensely terrifying psychedelic trip that can last up to 12 hours and generally makes you puke and shit your brains out. So … a bit more involved than yoga.

The legal status of ayahuasca in the U.S. is currently murky, as its active ingredient, DMT, is outlawed as a Schedule I drug, but the plant itself is unregulated. I’m going to guess this place got itself officially recognized as a church much like the Native American peyote churches did, “It’s my religion” being the sole, bizarre loophole through which America’s fascist police state will allow you to do something you should be allowed to do regardless.

So if you want to ingest this amazing plant in a therapeutic, clinical setting without appropriating another culture’s belief system, you’re shit out of luck. But if you’re into the spiritual aspects of ayahuasca and have a couple grand to burn, go here to fill out an application.

UPDATE, 1:30 p.m.: Following a large amount of interest, Ayahuasca Healings has closed their applications for the U.S. retreat for now, but you can still sign up for the mailing list to receive updates.
