Heavy Hawaii suffers from a common affliction: having a terrible name. Once you get past how bad the name is you’ll start enjoying their feel-good summertime anthems.
Heavy Hawaii only has two songs out right now, but they have caused a lot of buzz already. “Sleeping Bag” was featured on the Bathetic Records compilation “Summer Bummer (Get Laid, Get Wasted)” that sold out a while ago. Their latest song is the first single off their debut EP set for release September 28th on Art Fag Recordings. “Teen Angel” was released for free on the internet on friday and already has a lot of people talking. It’s a shame it was released so late in the summer, because it could have been up there with Tennis’s “Marathon” and the Magic Kids’ LP for the best summer jam.
Contrary to what the name implies, the band is actually from San Diego and have a heavy west coast vibe. Their songs have infectious vocal harmonies reminiscent of the Beach Boys with some of the catchiest hooks to come out of the west coast in a while.
There may only be a few songs to judge this band by, but those songs are a good sign of what to expect from their EP. With all the buzz they’ve generated it’d probably be a good idea to pre-order that EP, these things tend to sell out fast and it’s limited to 1,000 copies.
Take a listen to the lead single “Teen Angel.”
