Tim and Eric Roadshow Cometh

Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim are taking “Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!,” their Adult Swim program of surreal public-access absurdity, on tour under the banner of “Chrimbus Spectacular 2010.”

The tour starts November 1st in Seattle’s Showbox SODO and ends December 5th at Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse. The duo will make the performances a multimedia event with short films, sketches, musical numbers from Pusswhip Banggang and guest performers such as Neil Hamburger.

In many ways, Tim & Eric are the Boards of Canada of television, incorporating the charmingly nostalgic and warped sounds and visuals of public television. While Boards of Canada have always brought  to the fore the dusty disintegration of reel-to-reel tapes found in cold storage, infusing them with both child-like and alchemical wonder, Tim & Eric somehow bridge the gap between video artists and the homemade VHS movie explosion of the 80s.

We all remember our very first camcorder videos as children: the stiff acting, primitive special effects, in-camera editing and the analogue flickers and bursts of light that always seemed to accompany our little movies. Heidecker and Wareheim absorbed that sense of anarchic creation and fed it through some of the video art techniques used by artists such as Nam June Paik, Tony Oursler, Alex Bag and the Experimental Television Center in New York.

Whereas some video artists (think Knox Harrington from “The Big Lebowski”) create personas and work that go beyond artistic pretension—if that’s possible—Heidecker and Wareheim chose early on to invert the process and play up the absurdity. That they ‘ve been able to convince actors from Jeff Goldblum to John C. Reilly to participate in their madness is a wonder in and of itself.  In fact, Reilly’s character Steve Brule might be Heidecker and Wareheim’s finest creation. You owe it to yourself to check out “Brule’s Rules” and the spin-off program “Check It Out! With Dr. Steve Brule,” ya Dungus (as Brule would say).

It should be interesting to see how the short films and projected video plays in a live setting.
