Dual releases by Broken Social Scene’s precursor project are being re-released.
In the late 90s, before their individual groups’ success, Broken Social Scene founder and frontman Kevin Drew teamed up with Do Make Say Think’s Charles Spearin to make two lo-fi bedroom rock EPs as K.C. Accidental.
“Captured Anthems for an Empty Bathtub” and “Anthems for the Could’ve Bin Pills,” both rarities due to limited pressing and virtual non-availability outside of Canada, will be reissued by Arts & Crafts on October 26th.
The EPs, which encompass all of K.C. Accidental’s recorded work, hold a wide array of post-rock instrumental experiments ranging from the near-electronic “Anorexic He-Man” to the slow-building epic “Save the Last Breath.”
“Anthems for the Could’ve Bin Pills” features several future Broken Social Scenesters, including Emily Haines who sings a duet with Drew in “Them (Pop Song #3333),” Drew’s first ever vocal recording. The EP marks the beginning of an organic, collaborative effort between friends out of which Broken Social Scene would be born.
The assortment of sounds and instruments in the recordings — the fuzzed-out guitars, the soft vocals, the trumpets, and the horns — laid the groundwork for Broken Social Scene’s future influential releases.
“Captured Anthems for an Empty Bathtub” and “Anthems for the Could’ve Bin Pills” will be reissued in one package, on double vinyl, double CD, or digital format. Copies will also be available at Broken Social Scene’s North American tour stops.
