R. Kelly has 35 new chapters of ‘Trapped in the Closet’ ready for 2017
R. Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet,” the “hip hopera” that spawned millions of fans and almost as many parodies, has a whopping 35 new episodes ready for release, more than doubling the run time as it stands now. Kelly dropped the news in an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Consitiution, saying “I’m very excited about that. It will absolutely be out next year. I’ll tour if it’s a major deal, but if not I might just chill and just finish writing my movie scripts.” Kelly had first announced that the new chapters were coming in a November 2015 interview with Complex.
The “Trapped in the Closet” saga debuted with five tracks on Kelly’s 2005 album, “TP.3 Reloaded,” but it was expanded upon in video form with additional chapters in 2007. Kelly later struck a deal with IFC (the former Independent Film Channel) for the release of further installments, culminating in the broadcast of the 33rd chapter in 2012. In a 2013 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, IFC president and general manager Jennifer Caserta announced that there would be new chapters the following year and scheduled a marathon to promote them, but they never came to fruition.
“R. Kelly is an enormously talented artist and his creativity is on full display in Trapped in the Closet,” Caserta said in the interview. “We are fortunate to be his partner in this one-of-a-kind project that has captivated viewers and can’t wait to bring the next chapters of Trapped to IFC.” The network even made an official announcement on its website, pushing that we should expect “more R. Kelly, more drama, more crazy situations, more tumultuous relationships, more Sylvester, more Pimp Lucius, more Reverend Mosely, more everything that you love about Trapped in the Closet.”
No word yet where/how the new chapters will be released, whether it’s in conjunction with IFC, online, or a some sort of hybrid.
