Paul Ryan: Republicans to defund Planned Parenthood
House Speaker Paul Ryan vowed to deal a major blow to women’s health announcing the GOP’s bid to defund Planned Parenthood in accordance with his party’s efforts to repeal Obamacare. In addition to throwing over 20 million people off of their health coverage, Republicans move to cut off taxpayer money to the service that provides affordable cancer screenings, checkups, birth control, and reproductive services to women who would not be able to afford them otherwise.
According to Jezebel, about 40% of Planned Parenthood’s funding ($500 million) comes from federal funds, although via the Hyde amendment, that taxpayer money is barred from being spent on abortion and is instead used on other women’s health services, such as preventative health care, STI testing, and pregnancy tests. In fact, Planned Parenthood released data in 2015 revealing that the majority of the federal money goes towards STI testing, followed by contraceptive services.
“Planned Parenthood legislation would be in our reconciliation bill,” Ryan said during Thursday’s press conference. CNN pointed out that this might be a deal breaker for moderate Republicans in the Senate who aren’t on board with the pro-life faction.
“This is a priority for the Republicans,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said. “So I just would like to speak individually to women across America. This is about respect for you, for your judgment about your personal decisions in terms of your reproductive needs, the size and timing of your family or the rest, not to be determined by the insurance company or by the Republican ideological right-wing caucus in the House of Representatives. So this is a very important occasion where we’re pointing out very specifically what repeal of the [Affordable Care Act] will mean to woman.”

Otherwise, time to stock up on Plan B and hope we all make it through the grim “Handmaid’s Tale” fantasy of life in Mike Pence’s America.
