Watch Chris Cornell cover Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’
Overnight the world lost what was probably the greatest voice to come out of alternative rock explosion of the ’90s — if not the greatest voice of any genre in the decade period. Chris Cornell was 52, way too young to be sharing commemorative videos of some of his greatest performances, yet here we are.
Cornell was known not only for his soaring, clarion-clear voice, but his appreciation for great songs and artists who came before him, no matter how diverse. He’d performed haunting covers of Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and some, perhaps a tad more obvious, by his contemporaries. His unique, piercing, and incredibly expressive vocals always guaranteed a memorable interpretation.
In 2015, during a session at Sirius XM’s studios, Cornell covered another recently lost artistic genius, Prince. Accompanied by only another guitarist and a cellist, Cornell’s performance of “Nothing Compares 2 U” is as strong as any other, and a good way to remember the late singer’s talents as we mourn his death.
The track has surged to the top of the Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 chart merely hours after his death in Detroit.
