Chris Wallace gets Trump’s lawyer to admit he has no idea whether or not Trump is under investigation

Donald Trump’s lawyer, Jay Sekulow, was dispatched to pretty much every Sunday morning talk show to tell everyone to ignore that tweet where Trump said he was being investigated for obstruction of justice.

It seems pretty clear cut here, but Sekulow maintains that Trump is not under investigation and he was merely responding to a Washington Post article. It’s not a great defense, and every morning talk show host poked holes in it, but Chris Wallace of Fox News seemed to do the best job. He got Sekulow to admit that he actually has no idea whether or not Trump is under investigation and also sort of tricked him into accidentally saying himself that Trump is under investigation.

“The president has not been notified by anyone that he’s under investigation,” Sekulow says. He’s off to a really good start. Let’s see how long he can keep this momentum going.

“That tweet was in response to a Washington Post story that alleged five unnamed sources, anonymous sources, leaked to the Washington Post that the president was in fact under investigation, so that tweet was in response to that,” Sekulow continued. Great job again. Sticking to those talking points about leaks and unnamed sources. Nice work. Let’s keep it rolling.

“There’s been no notification of any investigation. Nothing’s changed since James Comey said the president was not a target or a subject of an investigation. Nothing’s changed.”

Here’s where everything starts to fall apart.

“Well, you don’t know that he isn’t under investigation now, do you?” Wallace asks.

“Well, no one’s notified us that he is so I can’t read people’s minds, but I can tell you this: We have not been notified that there’s an investigation of the president of the United States,” Sekulow says. “So nothing has changed in that regard since Comey’s testimony.”

Ah, here’s the thing though. Not being notified of an investigation is not the same thing as there not being one at all. It’s entirely possible Trump isn’t under investigation for obstruction of justice, but at the same time it’s equally possible that he is, as far as Sekulow is aware. This same point comes up again around the eight minute mark in the interview when Sekulow again claims there is no investigation.

“Well you don’t know whether there’s an investigation,” Wallace fires back. “Oh boy, this is weird. You don’t know whether there’s an investigation. You just told us that.”

I don’t know about you, but I definitely trust this guy to not break down and accidentally implicate me in a court of law.
