We’re barely into 2011, and we can already safely predict Cults as one of the year’s most talked-about bands.
Cults may be 2011′s Sleigh Bells. There are a lot of similarities that beg the comparison: they are both boy/ girl duos, they’re both from New York, the members of Cults are both in film school, and Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells looks like a movie star.
But perhaps the most striking similarity is how both bands emerged pretty much from non-existence to being the most the most buzzy bands around by sheer word of mouth in a few months. Cults didn’t even have a Myspace profile until mid-April, which made them pretty hard to find, and even harder to hear.
But the breezy, easy strength of their self-titled 7″ (which recalls Tennis and Best Coast) stirred up enough hype to land the band an old-fashioned major-label style release on Columbia Records. Their debut full-length will come out in May (details tbd) and the band will do some touring both stateside and abroad this spring to support it.
Take a listen to the full 7″ below, and stay tuned for more-details on the full-length debut—they’ll likely be unavoidable this year.

More from the shit factory. Christ. Are we supposed to jump for joy that this band is being compared to Sleigh Bells and/or Best Coast?
