Haiti Catastrophe: Is Bill Clinton The New Pat Robertson?

So, what’s the difference between Pat Robertson and Bill Clinton? Is there one? While Pat has denounced Haiti’s revolution as a pact with the devil. the silver-tongued Lothario that is Bill plans on reducing the nation into tourist hell.

Peter Hallward expounds on ‘our’ subjugation of Haiti here where he castigates the “noble international community which is currently scrambling to send international aid to [the country]…and  is largely responsible for the suffering it now aims to reduce”. Haitians themselves have had to live through falsified election procedures, members of the Famni Lavalas have been subjected to imprisonment and murder – all for the benefit of the sweatshop svengalis and multinationals who benefit directly from the relentless abuse and profiting form Haitians working in these horrendously unsafe environments. This has single-handedly driven the Haitians into their draconian slums and ultimately more open to disaster such as this.

And where is where the Neo-Liberal doctrine comes in. As outlined by Naomi Klein in The Shock Doctrine, these catastrophes are usually exploited by states and companies in a predatory fashion – see how the Bush administration turned New Orleans into a Mecca for developers and construction firms. So what is Clinton’s plan for Haiti? Well, these plans seemingly include an outspread of the sweatshop industry to capitalise upon the cheap labor available from the urban masses. Is this the way forward for Haiti post-disaster? What would Kanye West do?
