‘Bridesmaids’ Trailer: Kristen Wiig’s New Kind of Chick Flick

Kristen Wiig’s new movie “Bridesmaids” looks like a buddy comedy for women. And no, we will not be dubbing this new genre “homance.”

Trying to subvert the “chick flick” model is becoming a refreshing trend. “No Strings Attached” went there by making the female character commitment-phobic and job-obsessed, and while Tina Fey’s 2008 flick “Baby Mama” wasn’t my squeeze it certainly tread on unchartered territory.

But “Bridesmaids” looks like it could be a game changer. The Kristen Wiig/Annie Mumolo-penned flick stars Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, and Wendi McLendon-Covey and looks like the female version of “The Hangover.” Kemper even seems to inhabit the Ed Helmes, sensitive type, where as McCarthy is taking on the Zach Galifianakis lovable freak.

My fingers are crossed that this will be as good as the trailer suggests. Judd Apatow revived the buddy comedy with Seth Rogan and friends, and it’s great that he expanded his scope by producing what looks like a hilarious movie about female camaraderie. We’ll have to think of an acceptable nickname for the genre when “Bridesmaids” comes out in May.

Check out the trailer below.
