Cindy McCain, Gay Marriage Advocate?

If you type Cindy McCain’s name into a Google search bar, a conglomerate of search suggestions will appear. These include, but are not limited to, “Cindy McCain affair,” “Cindy McCain drugs,” Cindy McCain swimsuit,” and last, but certainly not least, “Cindy McCain oatmeal butterscotch cookies.” Sounds like my type of woman.

None of these surprised me more than the most recent addition to the McCain “controversy;” her ad campaign with No H8, an organization founded as a direct response to the passage of California’s Proposition 8. Wtf? I mean, I think it’s great that she’s stepping outside of the small, small box many Republicans seems to be stuck in, but I’m surprised nontheless.

McCain’s daughter, Meghan, is well known as an advocate for marriage equality and was recently invited to appear as a keynote speaker at George Washington University’s Marriage Equality Week. Naturally, gay rights organizations on campus are thrilled. Naturally, Republican organizations on campus are not thrilled.

Ironically enough, the Republicans on campus wanted Meghan to talk about “Redefining Republican” but threw a hissy-fit when they found out that she would be discussing marriage equality. Way to go, guys.
