Green Day's American Idiot is set to debut on Broadway this spring. The musical is not the first to set popular music to the stage. Mamma Mia! is based on the music of ABBA, and Xanadu used music from The Electric Light Orchestra. Set to open April 20th, 2010, (insert 4/20 joke here) Green Day will take their musical opera to the stage of St. James Theater. So is Broadway ready for American Idiot: The Musical? Green Day on Broadway?

When I first heard the album American Idiot back in 2004, I’ll admit that I didn’t immediately envision “Broadway Musical.” It seemed that the hype had overridden the actual music and I didn’t give the album the attention it deserved. Too many prepubescent teenage girls had taken a band I loved and turned them into a hot topic patch to put on their book bag.
Never have I been particularly “excited” for the opening of play on Broadway, but this should prove to be interesting. Perhaps what was washed out in the din of overproduced vocal choruses and crunch can be translated well into a story-based musical. I suppose it can’t be any worse than the rumored Fight Club Musical…
