Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman to Collaborate Again

Good news for people who love great movies.

Rumors started circling around the holidays that the creative force of Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman, who brought us “Being John Malkovich” and “Apdaptation,” would reunite, although no details were reported about what kind of tricks they had up their sleeves. Now Deadline Hollywood reports that the project is moving forward—written by Kaufman with Jonze set to direct—and that it’s being financed by Megan Ellison.

Though the movie doesn’t yet have a name, it does have a premise—and it sounds a lot like “Dr. Strangelove.” According to Deadline, it’s a satire about world leaders who secretly gather “to figure out all the seismic events that will take place in the world, from oil prices to wars that will be waged.”

And mysterious earthquakes? And thousands of birds that will die at once? Are Jonze and Kaufman HAARP believers, perhaps?

The theory has been floated that Charlie Kaufman, like Michele Gondry, needs another voice to keep him inside the lines. Kaufman’s “Synecdoche, New York” might have been epic, but it was so sprawling it was hard to relate to. Jonze, meanwhile, while he’s always fun to watch whether he’s making videos for Arcade Fire or adapting kids books, gets a little impressionistic without Kaufman’s stories as a roadmap.

These two guys making a satirical indictment of world political power? We’re pretty sure this just made our best-of 2012 list, and it doesn’t even have a name yet.
