Ricky Gervais Stops the Funny Business?

When I think of Ricky Gervais, I think of awkward dances, awkward glances, and most of all, hilariously awkward statements of political incorrectness that would make even Andrew Dice Clay blush. Since his career has skyrocketed even in the U.S. in recent years based on his comedic genius, you might expect the next release by Ricky Gervais in the cinematic realm to continue upon the same, well-trodden path.
But by the looks of the new trailer for Cemetery Junction, he is now in unfamiliar territory. This seems more like a trip into Wes Anderson’s realm, complete with slow motion. Take a look at the trailer after the jump.

This is intriguing to say the least. It’s nice to see anyone who’s had a bit of success change it up a bit. Plus it’s got Bowie on the soundtrack! Gervais’ writing partner Stephen Merchant also co-directed the film. For those of you who are looking for more standard fare from the man, he’s got an animated series coming out on HBO on Friday, February 19th.

This film is going to be a masterpiece and I predict oscar`s,and have you seen the poster? it is hilarious! Ricky is pulling a Brent face, like the one on the Promotion pictures for “If you Don`t know me” fantastic stuff….

Ricky & Steve are far from “unfamiliar territory.” The partners-in-comedy have always been able to make people laugh, but it’s the heart and romance of their projects that keeps everything glued together, & glues the audience to their seats. Intriguing, indeed! I’m sure that if Ricky & Steve were just in the same room as the cameras, Cemetery Junction will be fantastic!…. And what a perfect song!

This looks amazing. I absolutely cannot wait. I love everything Gervais/Merchant have ever done, and I am sure this will be no exception.

you can tell it’s gervais and merchant writing/directing from start! the interaction between the main character and the young lady! brilliant! i think that this as well as the emotion provoking stories behind the office and extras (xmas special in general) will cement ricky and stephens place on the drama side of things as well as the comedy for sure! sad to hear the podcasts are finishing aswell! ‘head like a f*cking orangeee!!!’

This will be great I’m sure,
but they really should have cast Karl Pilkington as the main character…

This film looks incredible. Gervais + Merchant = Gold. Even the trailer makes me feel emotional. A poem to 70′s Britain. Hope it does well, i’ll certainly be watching this at the Cinema.

  • neepsbeep

I dunno..ive got a horrible feeling its going to be rubbish. I really hope im wrong cos I love what Steve and Ricky do but there’s something not right about it

  • tony

no, it’s the mott the hoople version. still a bowie song though i guess…

and i think the movie looks brilliant.

It won’t make a blip in US theaters….straight to the discount rack at Blockbusters

  • Ed S.

Looks great – can’t wait to see it.

RE: the song – it’s definitely Bowie singing at the beginning. Not surprising they would use that version, Ricky is a huge D.B. fan. Guest appearance in Extras… It seems to blend into the M.t.H. version at the end, though.

    So – it’s actually both.

Really looking forward too it. Not sure what people are saying about This Side of the Truth being ‘preachy’, I thought it was more about irony. Either way, love everything Ricky and Steve have done, can’t wait to see this.
