Hollywood Bows to China

MGM remade “Red Dawn,” but instead of Russians invading, they changed the enemy to the Chinese. Oh, and then without any re-shoots, they changed the Chinese to North Koreans.

According to an article in the Los Angeles Times, the only thing better than Russians invading America is the Chinese invading America. Well, that was the case until Hollywood studio executives remembered that there’s a shit-ton of money to be made in Chinese box offices.

Hence now the only thing better than Russians invading America is North Koreans invading America. If only MGM studios would have thought of that before they finished making the movie.

If news of the 1984 film “Red Dawn” being remade wasn’t exciting enough, now we have controversy surrounding its already late release. In the original film, Russians invade the U.S., and a group of Mid-Western teenagers come together to fight those commie-bastards.

In the original remake, the Russians were replaced by the Chinese. In the remake of the original remake, the invaders will be North Korean. Confused? Me too.

So, how will MGM accomplish this cultural transformation without re-shooting anything? Simply by digitally removing every Chinese reference and turning it North Korean. Even the actors who play Chinese characters will be re-made to have Korean features.

So, even though China is a communist country and oppressive to its people and only lets about 20 non-Chinese films into its theaters each year, Hollywood thinks it’s a good idea to keep them happy because there’s money to be made.

We’re talking about some serious Yen here, so make sure to leave your moral compass at home. And if you do slip up and accidentally retain some sense of self-respect, that’s OK, they’ll just fix it in post-production.

Amigo, Yens are the currency of Japan, not China. It’s RMB there.
