Twitter Turns Five

Here’s to being one year closer to overcoming intellectual infancy!

On the 21st of this month, Twitter will celebrate the fifth anniversary of its first ever tweet. In the five years since its birth, the social media baby has grown into a prodigious, highly endearing, and undoubtedly precocious child. It has humored us, embarrassed us, informed us and given us an inflated sense of our own importance. We’ve grown attached, and can’t help shedding a tear on the occasion of its birthday. It’s growing up so fast!

We’re impressed by its surprising recent maturity. It showed a startling interest in the Egyptian revolution, and we patted it on the head like the good boy it is. It made a fair bit of noise about the Wisconsin senate’s anti-union bill, the concerned little citizen, and even gave some thought to the ongoing popular unrest in Bahrain and Libya.

At the end of the day, though, it’s still one of GaGa’s little monsters. It still follows with rapt attention the adult antics of not-quite-grown-ups like crazy Mr. Sheen. Its budding appetite for political discourse still gives way to its preoccupation with Justin Bieber’s hair, which sometimes manifests in 80,000 users worth of petulance. And although it is definitely worried about the fallout of Japan’s near nuclear catastrophe, it can’t help being distracted by 13 year old Rebecca Black’s shortcut to fame.

Oh well. It’s a young one yet.

Happy Birthday, Twitter. We can’t help but love you.
