The last few weeks have been a Burial bonanza—we couldn’t be happier.
It was only last week that Four Tet debuted two tracks from a collaboration with Burial and Thom Yorke. The songs—”Ego” and “Mirror”—sounded more Burial than either Four Tet or Thom Yorke, which was encouraging, since it meant that Burial was probably emerging from a quasi-hibernatory period following the release of album “Untrue” (though he has done collaborations and remixes here and there).
The two new Burial tracks, “Street Halo” and “Stolen Dog,” were ripped last night from Benji B’s BBC Radio 1 show, when Kode9 of Hyperdub dropped by the studio to debut Burial’s 12″ vinyl “Street Halo” single (also available digitally through Hyperdub website). The tracks contain the dark, night-light atmospherics that Burial is known for: the type of soundtrack one might hear in their heads if they were traversing an abandoned, though still illuminated city.
“Stolen Dog” is a strong contender for Track of the Year and it’s not even April. (The third track on the single is “NYC,” which was not debuted on BBC Radio 1.) Kode9 was evasive when asked if a new Burial album is forthcoming, but he did say, “nothing’s finished.” That means that at least something is underway.
