“Willie Nelson is 77 years old and I’m 78,” said Hudspeth County Attorney Kit Bramblett. “He’s been my favorite artist all my life. We all know he smokes a little pot.”

Willie Nelson was arrested in Sierra Blanca, Texas last November when border control searched his tour bus and found 6.24 ounces of bud.

Singling out Nelson’s bus for a search seems like a cheap shot. Nelson has graced the cover of High Times at least twice and is widely known for smoking tons of weed. Searching his tour bus for weed would be like searching Flavor Flav’s neck for a clock or Lil Wayne’s mouth for shiny teeth.

Also, Hudspeth County Sherriff Arvin West seemed like he was trying to make an example of Nelson. He told El Paso Times, “It’s kind of surprising, but I mean we treat him like anybody else…He could get 180 days in county jail.” And then added, “If he does, I’m going to make him cook and clean.” What a dick.

So we’re relieved to see that the county’s attorney is striking a different note.

“You bet your ass I ain’t gonna be mean to Willie Nelson,” Bramblett told the Big Bend Sentinel and then made a pretty hilarious barter:

“I’m gonna let him plead, pay a small fine and he’s gotta sing ‘Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain’ with his guitar right there in the courtroom.”
