Oklahoma psych rockers Colourmusic set to drop their psychedelic concept album. Ready your psychedelics, friends.
Colourmusic will blast the epidermis off your body and melt the fat deposits with their riffs. Layered beneath the crunching tumult, however, lay psych hymns, infectious grooves and infinitely hummable melodies.
For all the hype in recent years of psychedelia’s resurgence through electronic studio wizardry with bands like Animal Collective and Yeasayer, there really is only one band who is doing hard psychedelic: Colourmusic. And let it be said right now that they are the most dynamic of any band attempting psychedelic rock.
“Beard” contains such a fuzzed out whirlwind that it will shake the bohemian hip set straight out of their costumes, and send them running for the hills crying, “Too much. Too much!” The song “Yes” sounds as if it could have been written by T.Rex circa “The Slider”—it’s anthemic and sexy with Ryan Hendrix singing repeating lines of “You’re a lovin’ machine… Gonna kiss your mouth… Gonna give you love… You’re a lovin’ machine.” The lead guitar work alone on “Yes” is worth the listen, recalling Brian Eno and early Flaming Lips, both of whom the band have cited as influences. ”You For Living Me” continues the T. Rex vibe before dropping blistering lead guitar all over the place.
And things get doubly sexy on “Tog,” which conjures the sounds of Love & Rockets’ “No New Tale to Tell” and The Jesus & Mary Chain. Pure, dark sex. Alchemical. The rhythm section shines in this song with hypnotic drones coloring the background. ”We Shall Wish (Use Your Adult Voice)” begins with Robert Plant psycho-sexual howls until tribal drums shift the song into a manic suite of sounds.
Stream these five tracks below before the album drops April 4th, and for another angle of psychedelia, check out Connan Mockasin’s “Forever Love Dolphin.”

Deej, I must say, when listening to “Yes” and “You For Leaving Me” I could definitely hear the tribal drums. I dug it. Matter fact, I had the strange urge come over me to paint myself and do a tribal dance. Needless to say I did neither, would that be appropriate behavior for your mum? Anyhow, I did enjoy. You know me it’s hard to break away from tranquil and euphoric music.
