Today Tina Fey admirers everywhere shed a single tear.
In a recent interview with Vulture, Alec Baldwin unofficially announced the end of a show that has kept America laughing since 2006.
“I will tell you one thing,” said Baldwin, “And that is our show next year is our last year of the show.” According to Baldwin, both he and show creator Tina Fey’s contracts are expiring in 2012, and with all of the show’s success, it seems as though Fey will just be too busy to keep 30 Rock going: “Our contracts are expired [in 2012], and Tina is gonna have a big career directing films and writing. She’s going to be the next Elaine May. She’ll be great,” said Baldwin.
Over the past five years, NBC’s “30 Rock” has been one of the few network television shows worth watching. Original writing and a great cast naturally make for good TV, and while this combination doesn’t always guarantee mainstream success, i.e. “Arrested Development”, “30 Rock” has been running strong for five seasons.
Going out on a sixth season seems like a smart move. Too often, we see shows try to stay fresh far beyond their expiration date, and the result is always disappointing for everyone. Rather than stretching themselves too thin and creating mediocre episodes, Tina Fey & co. are wisely choosing to go out on top.
