Donald Trump Haunted By Past Political Donations

Senator Rand Paul and media leaders are finally taking a hard look at alleged Republican Donald Trump’s donations to Democrats.

Tea Party darling Rand Paul appeared in first-in-the-nation primary state New Hampshire today for a Merrimack County Republican Committee breakfast. While there, Paul took time to address a long-neglected truth about Donald Trump: the businessman, who claims to be interested in the GOP presidential nomination, has lavished thousands of dollars on Democratic leaders.

“I’ve come to New Hampshire today because I’m very concerned. I want to see the original long-form certificate of Donald Trump’s Republican registration,” Paul joked, before pointing out that Trump donated $4,800 to Democratic Sen. Harry Reid and $24,000 to Rep. Charlie Rangel. “I’m going to believe it when I see his embossed seal to his Republican registration.”

Paul continued, “Let’s look to Republicans who not only talk the talk, but walk the walk.”

Fox News also highlighted Trump’s past political donations, forcing Trump to defend himself.

“I’ve lived in New York. This building, this great tower, and many other great towers are here in New York. Everyone’s Democratic,” Trump explained. “So what am I going to do — contribute to Republicans? One thing: I’m not stupid.”

While that may be true, Salon’s Steve Kornacki noted that “none of this explains the significant donations Trump has made to numerous Democratic Senate candidates from outside New York — candidates, in many instances, who faced close races against their Republican opponents.”

I highlighted Trump’s Democratic donations about a month ago, and it’s nice to see others paying attention to his decidedly non-Republican political habits, shedding light on the one constant running through Trump’s self-proclaimed political career: opportunism.
