It involves a flugelhorn and some people in “Wizard of Oz” costumes, but since Wayne Coyne is involved nothing should come as a surprise.
If you’re normally annoyed by people who whip out their cameras at concerts to record videos of the performance, just stop it right now. Without those amateur filmmakers, the rest of the world would be deprived of really cool collaborations like the one between MGMT and The Flaming Lips, which happened at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis this weekend.
The groups joined up for a version of MGMT’s indie hit “Kids.” The performance involved a flugelhorn, played by Andrew VanWyngarden, plus men and women on the stage in “Wizard of Oz” costumes—Dorothy and the Tin Man, to be specific. Why not. The video’s a little shaky and at times the audience singing along overpowers the bands, but it’s a pretty epic live combination.

The Flaming Lips debuted Wizard of Oz dancer costumes and covered “Kids” with MGMT on Friday night. On Saturday morning I posted pictures, details about the set and the collab, background on the costumes and video (the full “kids” performance – this version cuts off the first minute or so, and Ego’s Last Stand) at http://psychexfutureheart.wordpress.com/
