The National Debut "Terrible Love" on Jimmy Fallon

Screen shot 2010-03-11 at 3.11.16 PMLast night The National debuted “Terrible Love,” the first track off their upcoming release High Violet due out May 11th. For a band that has been playing for over a decade, The National still bring it hard and this song is going to toss their newest album into some unknown outer space area where incredible songs go to live forever. “Terrible Love,” I think, was the perfect song for the band to perform live, not only because it is an unreleased track from their newest album but also because of the general vibe of the song itself. The calm start resonates across the stage and an instant feeling of excitement and anticipation begins to crawl inside you while the pace of the song seems to begin to pick up momentum. It all culminates in a sudden burst of emotion driven by hammering drums and break-neck guitar strumming. Matt Berninger croons and howls over the atmospheric chorus, and by the end of the tune the band seems to meld together in a powerful wall of sound. Then, out of nowhere, the song ends and I was left wanting more chaotic melodies the last half of the song creates.  If “Terrible Love” is any indication as to the awesomeness of the album on the whole, I’d venture to guess that The National’s upcoming fifth release High Violet is going to be a banger. See the Jimmy Fallon performance below.
