Among my favorite childhood memories is drinking tea with my mom while watching the “Golden Girls,” and I’m always thrilled when I catch syndicated episodes on TV Land. Betty White, who played the show’s sweet Rose hasn’t ever quite left the limelight and was most recently featured on a SuperBowl advertisement for Snickers; an ad that definitely wouldn’t have been as funny without her.
Although “Saturday Night Live” had propositioned White to host in the past, scheduling conflicts prevented the star from ever appearing. However, a recent Facebook campaign to get her on “SNL” seems to have succeeded. The Times reported today that White, 88, has finally signed on to host an “SNL” Mother’s Day special on May 8th, which will also feature returning “SNL” members Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Anna Gasteyer, Rachel Dratch, and Molly Shannon.
White addresses the campaign, which has nearly a half a million supporters, in a recent interview with Diane Sawyer, concluding that people “just dig old ladies.” “That came out of left field. I have no idea. I’m such a technological spaz, I can’t — I don’t understand any of that stuff. And all of a sudden, all this stuff has come in, and I’m just watching it in awe.”
White’s one stipulation to the gig? “No nudity – just explain to them ahead of time – no nudity.”
