Are The Doors the ultimate example of a ‘phase’ band? Y’know, the kinda band one thinks are remarkably cool and meaningful at age 14 but soon forgets all about them as real life takes over. Well, this is seemingly not the case for one-time 21 Jump Street actor Johnny Depp who will feature on 15 tracks of the soundtrack album for an upcoming Doors documentary, reciting poetry written by Jim Morrison.
When You’re Strange, recently debuted at the Berlin Film Festival, contains hours of footage from the band’s beginnings until Morrison’s demise in a Parisian bathtub in 1971. Directed by Tom Di Cillo, the initial screening of the film prompted drummer John Densmore to get “a little teary” on seeing Morrison once again.
“It shows Jim in the beginning, his innocence and shyness and everything, and I love seeing that – that’s the Jim I knew,” Densmore revealed to Mojo Magazine. The film also maintains that the band would have reunited, despite Morrison’s relocation to Paris. “[Jim] asked how [Doors album] LA Woman was doing and I said, ‘Great,’” Densmore recalled. “I told him that “Love Her Madly” was the single and that they wanted a second single. He said, ‘Well, maybe I’ll come back.’”
Jim Morrison published two volumes of poetry prior to his death but countless more has appeared posthumously. The soundtrack album will be released April 6 on Rhino.

I stand by my affection for Jim Morrison, although I am no longer 14.
