It’s no surprise to see a line half-a-block long at Upright Citizens Brigade Theater on any given night. The theater offers up $5 tickets to some of the best improv comedy in New York City. After waiting in line last night, I got the chance to see Adsit and Gausas, a duo that hones the edge of gender roles. They put on an hour long show, confronting what it means to be a man or woman in this day and age. Sexting, Hulk Hogan and Minnie Mouse were just a few of the lambasted subjects of last night’s show.
The sexual chemistry between the two actors was palpable, both members were able to take each ridiculous subject to a higher level and no matter how absurd it became, they always managed to bring it full circle, which is always the best. Of the best sketches of the evening took place on a canoe, with what seemed like a misunderstood first date between the two. (“I’m in H&R, you’re in PR, we both have professions that end in R…” )
In that scene, Adsit improv-ed a perv while Gausas improv-ed a prude and they end up sexting each other at opposite sides of the canoe. They flow easily from scene to scene, from awkward first date, to a well-connected couple with Wedding Day blues, to a long term-married couple that can’t touch each other through the arc of the show.
Adsit and Gausas do Wednesday shows at Upright Citizen Brigade on 307 West 26th Street at 9:30pm, but reserve tickets and get there an hour early. For anyone who can’t make it, you can catch a bit of Scott Adsit on 30 Rock Thursdays at 9:30pm.
