Moon Duo channel some Primal Scream visually and musically for track “Fallout.”
One can’t help but be reminded of both Primal Scream and the Jesus & Mary Chain with Moon Duo’s music video for “Fallout.” Though fuzz and drone was around long before JAMC (think Velvet Underground, Suicide, 13th Floor Elevators, and even Neil Young, to name a few), nearly every fuzzed out piece of sublime or melancholy melody inevitably gets compared to the Scottish rockers. Even My Bloody Valentine couldn’t avoid the JAMC comparison.
Then, of course, Primal Scream came along–begun by ex-JAMC drummer Bobby Gillespie–and occasionally veered into fuzzy freak-outs atop motorik beats, especially on the classic album “XTRMNTR” and its follow-up “Evil Heat,” (which featured guitar work by Kevin Shields and Bernard Sumner of New Order, who both played on song “Shoot Speed/Kill Light“).
And so it is that Moon Duo naturally face a lot of comparisons with their brand of rock and roll. But, this is a style that always allows plenty of room for experimentation, and Moon Duo always keep it sonically interesting and I daresay groovy.
Moon Duo’s music video “Fallout” even reminds one of Primal Scream’s video for “Autobahn 66″ (which seems to have disappeared from the internet). Nonetheless, it is a pleasure to look at, really. Very Douglas Trumbull.
