Review: Sia at Terminal 5

May 7th, 2010 by Danielle Johnsen

siaIt was hard not to be completely in love with Sia when I left Terminal 5 last night. The Australian chanteuse entertained folks for an hour and a half at her NY stop from her ‘We Meaning You’ tour with her carefully crafted set list of classic heartwarming standards and dance pop ditties. In support of her forthcoming album “We Are Born” Sia treated the enthralled crowd with her perfect mixture of a diva vocal range and childlike charisma. With a backdrop of colorful macrame and craftacular knick knacks, she not only got the crowd moving on their feet, but encouraged their participation. At one point, the adorable singer, who sported a hand knit plastic dress and a pinwheel bubble backpack, asked the crowd, “So who’s going to heckle me?” And we quickly learned that this crowd was much more interested in singing along than poking fun. Trailer: "Machete" Brings the Camp and the D-List

May 5th, 2010 by Danielle Johnsen

machete_movie_image_danny_trejoWhen it was announced that Robert Rodriquez was going to turn his faux trailer “Machete” for “Grindhouse” into a full length flick, I nearly lost my mind. If there is something Rodriquez excels at its his commitment to bringing back the tacky and graphic B-films of the 1970′s, filled to the high heavens with D-List stars. And since I have a soft spot in my heart for craptacular films heavy on the action and a virtual whose-who of nobodies, I was incredibly pleased with the cheesy gruesomeness delivered with the “illegal” Red Band trailer Rodriquez and Danny Trejo, Machete himself, released today to celebrate Cinco De Mayo. Keeping It Classy with Conan O'Brien

May 3rd, 2010 by Danielle Johnsen

60 Minutes Conan OBrienOne word comes to mind when I think of Conan O’Brien after the late night debacle and that’s classy. While the one-time employee of NBC had to sign a non-defamatory agreement when he left NBC this year, I would assume his discussion about his previous employers and Jay Leno would remain respectful even if he hadn’t. O’Brien sat down with Steve Kroft for an exclusive ‘exit interview’ for “60 Minutes“, which aired this past Sunday just a day after the contractual TV gag order put on O’Brien by NBC had come to an end. Video: M.I.A. – 'Born Free' – NSFW

April 26th, 2010 by Danielle Johnsen

gingersWowza! When M.I.A. was discussing her evolution a few weeks ago, she wasn’t lying. The new single ‘Born Free‘, which was leaked last week is much more Liars than her typical catchy Summer ‘Paper Planes‘ style jams. D+T posted a link for the latest single from her upcoming album last week, but it has since been taken down. And the video for the single, directed by Romain Gavras, is overtly violent and capitalizes on the message M.I.A.‘s been attempting to get across for a while. The very NSFW video, which features police raids, sex scenes and the murdering of various red-headed teens is after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Nudedragons: Reunited and Sold Out

April 16th, 2010 by Danielle Johnsen

soundgardenIf you just got an email letting you know that Nudedragons was playing an impromptu show tonight in Seattle, WA then you are: sad you do not live in Seattle or its neighboring towns AND a fan of grunge rock gods Soundgarden. The band who along with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and a handful of others pioneered the Seattle sound that shifted the music industry and the vast majority of adolescents in the early 1990′s is back. Follow Us on Twitter!

April 14th, 2010 by Danielle Johnsen

twitter-bird-picIt didn’t take long for bands, and more importantly record labels, to harness the power of Twitter. As we saw with MySpace a few years back, it seems that if you aren’t on Twitter, you don’t matter -at least in a marketing capacity. Newbies to the rock world, like MGMT and celebrated folks, like Echo and the Bunnymen, are the latest in the long line of major bands sigining up to tune in and tweet on. Is The Sarah Palin Network A Reality?

April 12th, 2010 by Danielle Johnsen

feyaspalinTina Fey brought it once again while hosting “Saturday Night Live” this past weekend. And as expected, she revisited her nearly perfect impression of former Governor Sarah Palin with one of the funnier sketches of the season, ‘The Sarah Palin Network’. From poking fun at the Tea Party folks to the idea of ‘Gotcha Journalism’, this was a five minute full-on attack of our one-time Vice Presidential candidate and her media saturation. While it was humorous, it also didn’t seem like too foreign of a concept. Read the rest of this entry »

Hollywood, Are You Trying to Kill Goldie Hawn?

March 31st, 2010 by Danielle Johnsen

Private BenjaminSeriously, Hollywood why are you trying to remake all of Goldie Hawn’s classic movies? Last week, it was announced that J.Lo will stink up star in an updated version of the 1980′s classic Overboard. And now it seems that wasn’t enough, as today it was announced that NewLine/Warner Bros. are set to remake of Private Benjamin, with Anna Faris to star. Yes, the assault on my lovely childhood continues, but at least this time the casting is perfect. While normally I would threaten an all out attack on Hollywood for the audacity to even attempt to remake such a classic, my love of all things Faris is calming my anger and peaking my interest in a remake.
